TL:DR: This Week in AI ⚡️

🔐 AI Agents Slipped Past Locks, on Orders and on Their Own
During an internal statistics project, Claude requested an access token nobody asked it to get and pulled aggregate vote counts from a Georgia dashboard the state normally charges for. No voter records were touched, and Anthropic says it has blocked such actions since, but it joins tens of thousands of incidents the big labs are investigating. Criminals are steering agents on purpose, too: NorForge found more than 20 exposed control panels for an AI hacking system called Cairn, one group running over 1,100 attack projects against online stores, about one in ten reaching its goal, and reported victims include John Deere, SharkNinja and Cummins. Microsoft Security’s Hayete Gallot now says companies must treat their own agents as insiders and check every action before it runs. Telling an agent “don’t” is not a lock; narrow credentials, logs and approval steps are.
🛒 Stores and Banks Began Writing the Rules for AI Shoppers
Walmart’s Agent Profiles, due within a month, give each shopping agent its own profile in your account, with either approval on every order or a spending limit such as $50 or $100, and no access to your card number. Amazon has gone the other way, repeatedly asking Perplexity to pull Amazon from its Comet browser while pushing its own Alexa for Shopping. And Axios reports that major U.S. banks are finding unvetted agents inside customer accounts and blocking them, unable to tell a bot from a person. The agents are coming anyway: Anthropic’s new Claude Duet keeps working from its own cloud computer while your devices are off, but waits for your OK on every payment, message or signature and pays through Stripe’s Link with a virtual card, while 1Password for Agents lets such agents sign in without seeing your password. Start any shopping agent on approval for every purchase.
🩺 Microsoft’s Diagnostic AI Beat Doctors, With Fine Print
Microsoft AI’s MAI-DxO solved 83% of 304 hard cases from The New England Journal of Medicine in a step-by-step simulation, against 36% for physicians with textbooks and the internet, and 80% to 47% on typical emergency-room cases. It works like a panel of virtual doctors that propose diagnoses, order tests and challenge one another while weighing each test’s cost. The study is published in Science, but TechCrunch’s read of its data adds caveats: the doctors were generalists working alone, not the specialists who usually take such cases, and GPT-5 alone already scored 78.9%, so the panel added about four points. The real test comes next, as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center compares its calls with emergency doctors’ on consenting patients, and Mayo Clinic helps Microsoft build a healthcare model due next year. For now, 83% is a simulation score, not a bedside one.
Before You Go 📌️
- 🔍 Claroc found more than 6,800 shared Meta Muse chats through public DNS records, some holding loan applications and revenue reviews, and Meta paused Muse sharing while it reviews the report.
- 🐍 A hijacked LiteLLM release, version 1.107.0, carried credential-stealing malware on PyPI for about two hours on October 21, so anyone who installed it should treat that machine as compromised.
- 🧬 OpenAI, PerturbAI and Scripps Research ran 1,946 GPT-Rosalind agents in parallel over data from millions of mouse brain cells and produced research leads in 32 minutes, per a bioRxiv preprint, leaving the testing to scientists.
- 🏦 Barclays is cutting about 5,000 jobs, 5% of its workforce, as it uses AI to reduce fixed costs, with roughly 60% of the cuts landing in support roles such as developers.
- ⚖️ Anthropic confirmed a draft federal bill letting the Commerce Department ask a judge to halt a model’s release when evaluators find an imminent risk of more than 50 deaths or $1 billion in damage.
