AI Spotlight: Data Analysis with ChatGPT-4o

Screen shot of data analysis using ChatGPT.

OpenAI made a big announcement last week that could make using Excel slightly less miserable.

You’ll be able to edit spreadsheets, tables, and charts directly in ChatGPT-4o by simply prompting it with your request.

And, ChatGPT will now support interactions with files directly from GDrive and Microsoft OneDrive.

Previously you had to download an Excel file, convert it to CSV, then upload it to ChatGPT, where ChatGPT would make the edits, and then download the edited CSV to reopen it. There were obvious productivity gains to be had here.

Put simply, and perhaps as many of us hoped it would be in the first place, you can now upload an Excel or GSheet to ChatGPT, and it will serve as a data intern that can deliver analyses on the fly.

So what will you actually be able to do with this?

Just about any type of basic data analysis that you might assign to an intern. Tasks like:

  • Analyzing large datasets to pinpoint trends, crucial stats, results, and more.
  • General spreadsheet editing — combining datasets, cleaning data, creating pivot tables.
  • Generating, editing, and customizing any type of chart.
  • Preparing financial statements like balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.

Just upload a file, click “Expand View,” and start directing.

We recommend checking out the demos in OpenAI’s announcement post to grasp what it’s capable of.

When can I try it?

This feature will roll out to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users in the coming weeks.

Those with early access, like the folks over at The Neuron, say it’s pretty impressive. They have access and have verified that it’s way better and faster than the previous data analyst. They say it’s not flawless, so always double-check important figures in charts or tables, but that it excels at basic spreadsheet modifications and uncovering insights about data. Exciting times.

Microsoft and Google have been teasing similar features that are to appear natively inside of Excel / GSheet, but for now, ChatGPT-4o is at the forefront.
